The Culture Door to Bengal
- In collaboration with The Culture Door CIC, we launched a vibrant arts initiative, "The Cultural Door to Bengal," aimed at celebrating and exploring the rich cultural heritage of the local Bengali community. Running from September to October 2024, the project featured a series of workshops, performances, and exhibitions that showcased traditional Bengali music, crafts, and dance.
Organised in collaboration with the Bengali community and artists from Kolkata, the project brought the unique traditions of Bengal to life, offering participants an opportunity to learn directly from skilled artists. Through hands-on workshops and interactive sessions, attendees explored the intricate crafts, lively dance forms, and musical heritage of Bengali culture.
"We were excited to present The Cultural Door to Bengal as a way to bridge cultural gaps and foster a deeper understanding of the Bengali community in Peterborough," said Anamika Ghosh, Project Artist Liaison. "Our goal was to create an inclusive space where everyone could engage with and appreciate the richness of Bengali art and traditions."
Key Highlights of the Project:
Workshops and Learning Sessions: Weekly workshops were open to the public and free of charge. These sessions focused on traditional Bengali crafts, music, and dance, engaging participants of all ages. They were held at Southgrove Community Centre, Grove St, Peterborough PE2 9AG. Traditional Bengali food and drink were provided free of charge during the sessions.
International Artistic Collaboration: The project included live online connections with renowned artists from Kolkata, offering unique opportunities for cross-cultural learning and artistic exchange.
Durga Puja Showcase Event: The workshops culminated in a grand showcase event during the UNESCO-recognized Durga Puja celebrations at Nene Park on 13th October from 3 pm onwards. The event featured live performances, craft exhibitions, and displays of the community’s creative outputs.
Partnership with Bengali Sanskriti Club: The project partnered with the Bengali Sanskriti Club to deliver an authentic cultural experience during the final day of Durga Puja celebrations, providing the wider Peterborough audience a genuine glimpse into Bengali traditions.
