The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity
- The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŚP): A Celebration of Heart, Community, and Polish Spirit in Peterborough
Each year, something truly remarkable happens in cities across the world—people gather not just to raise funds, but to share warmth, music, food, and hope. For the Polish community living in the UK, the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (Wielka Orkiestra Świątecznej Pomocy – WOŚP) is more than just an annual fundraiser. It is a powerful expression of unity, cultural pride, and commitment to supporting those in need.
What is WOŚP?
Founded in Poland in 1993 by Jerzy Owsiak, WOŚP is the largest non-governmental, non-profit charity organisation in Poland, dedicated to supporting public healthcare. Every January, the charity hosts its Grand Finale, raising money for medical equipment, with each year focusing on a different medical cause—ranging from children's hospitals to elderly care.
Over the decades, it has become a national tradition, supported by millions in Poland and across the globe. Today, hundreds of Polish communities abroad—from the USA to Australia—host their own finales, including right here in Peterborough.
The Grand Finale in Peterborough 2025
On a chilly January weekend, nearly 1,700 guests gathered in Peterborough for the 33rd Grand Finale of WOŚP. The local Polish community came together in an inspiring celebration of generosity and culture, raising nearly £8,000—equivalent to around 40,000 PLN—to support this year’s cause.
The day was filled with joy and heartfelt moments:
❤️ Over 700 pierogi were served
❤️ 100 litres of bigos cooked
❤️ More than 70kg of sausage, bacon and pork neck grilled
❤️ 65kg of homemade cake sold
❤️ And over 300 teas and coffees brewed
It was more than just a fundraiser—it was a celebration of Polish heritage and community spirit.
Community Engagement at Its Finest
This event would not have been possible without the incredible efforts of local volunteers, performers, organisers, and the wider community. Local Polish artists and groups, including Accidental Fortune, Tomasz Stachowiak, Beata Buczyńska, the Polish Music Centre, Polish School in Peterborough, and the Traditional Karate Academy, all contributed to the vibrant atmosphere.
We were honoured to welcome special guests from Poland, including host Mateusz Urbaniak, and performances by Mariusz Urbaniak, Laura Bączkiewicz, Monika Urlik, and a brilliant Polish magician, Bartosz Knasta, who dazzled the crowd.
And for the first time, the event was live-streamed by TVP (Polish National Television), sharing the story of Peterborough’s dedication with audiences across Poland and the world.
Powered by Polish Business
One of the most powerful elements of this year’s finale was the fact that the entire event was sponsored by Polish businesses in Peterborough. From logistics and food to raffle prizes and promotional materials, local Polish entrepreneurs stepped up to support this important cause.
Their sponsorship not only made the event possible—it showed the strength and generosity of the Polish business community here in the UK.
Why It Matters
For Poles living in the UK, WOŚP is more than charity—it's a way to stay connected to home, preserve culture, and pass down values to future generations. It reminds us that no matter where we are in the world, community matters—and when we come together, we can do great things.
As we look ahead to the 34th Grand Finale on 25 January 2026, we carry forward not only the funds raised, but the spirit of togetherness that defines WOŚP.
Thank you, Peterborough. Thank you, Polish community. Let the music of the orchestra play on. ❤️
